    About the Roles
    Our client is seeking Field Surveillance Officers to join the National Tropical Weed Eradication Program (NTWEP) with roles on offer based out of Mossman, Queensland.
    Working hours are Monday to Friday with start time from 6am. Hours may vary, dependant on weather conditions. The role will require you to undertake specialised field surveillance and treatment to eradicate target weed species from the Australian environment (Miconia spp, Mikania micrantha and Limnocharis flava).
    Residents local to Cairns areas are strongly encouraged to apply. These are casual positions with possibility of extension. Work over the upcoming wet season is required.

    Your role will include, but not be limited to -

    • Safely use a machete in rainforest environments to undertake surveillance and treatment activities.
    • Majority of surveillance and treatment activities are conducted in terrain defined as challenging slopes, steep gradients, dense vegetation. You will need to carry sufficient operational equipment, food and water for an entire day. You will be exposed to the tropical weather conditions, as well as a range of dangerous flora and fauna.
    • Walk considerable distances every day, including elevation in rainforest habitat e.g. continuous walking for up to 60 minutes and up to approximately 15 kilometres a day).
    • Work effectively in teams of outdoor workers in challenging environments. This includes working within a team environment to deliver surveillance, and can include field evacuations due to first aid treatment events.
    • Field based surveillance, mapping and treatment activities for the eradication of targeted weed species.
    • Collect GPS data, record and correlate other information according to the requirements of the project
    • Communicate effectively with landholders, program managers, staff and stakeholders
    • Operate and maintain a variety of field equipment such as spray units, chainsaws, GPS and other navigational equipment

    Eligibility requirements

    • Experience in intensive outdoor labouring, hand weed control and/or tropical rainforest field work.
    • MUST have the ability to work through varied and challenging environmental conditions for long periods of time.
    • WHS Focus - Ability to recognise, manage and follow workplace health and safety directions.
    • Experience in intensive outdoor labouring, hand weed control and/or tropical rainforest field work.
    • MUST have a current valid open manual C (car) class QLD drivers' licence.
    • MUST be willing and able to pass Drug and Alcohol test and Physical Functional Assessment
    • MUST be willing and able to obtain a National Police Check
    • To be eligible for employment in this position, you must be an Australian citizen, have permanent residency status or a visa permitting you to work in Australia. Evidence of your residency status or visa, with your right to work (including any conditions / restrictions) prior to engagement.
